Lake Victoria is the second largest fresh-water lake in the world and is shared by three East African states, namely Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. It is also renowned for being the major source of the River Nile, the third longest river in the world, which traverses the Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt. Fairmont Mara Safari Club's connection to this is that it is surrounded, on three sides, by the Mara River which pours its waters into Lake Victoria, after first crossing into Tanzania's Serengeti National Park. The next connection is a 25 minute flight from the Masai Mara to Mfangano island, one of the hundreds of islands in Lake Victoria. Once on the island, guests are met and after taking some refreshments, board a motorised fishing boat for a tour of various islands to see how the people of the Lake live. At the same time the fishing rods are out to catch some Tilapia or the gigantic Nile Perch. The Nile Perch can weigh anything from 10 lbs. to over 200 lbs.
On landing, take some lunch and after a short rest, board your flight back to the Masai Mara, not forgetting to bring back your catch to share with your friends. The Fairmont Mara Safari Club will be delighted to prepare it any way you like it, or the local traditional way! On return, you are still in time for the afternoon game drive, if the fishing has not taken its toll on you. |
